In this condition, when submitted to a temperature of about 650 Fahr., the resulting product will be quite white, which after being finely ground is called by the "Union Stone Company" "Union cement." The purity of colour of the cement depends very much on the character of the carbonate of magnesia, for if the analysis gives any appreciable quantity of oxide of iron, the cement has a reddish tinge, which does not, however, injuriously affect its cementitious value. The burnt magnesite (oxide of magnesium) is used for various concrete purposes, and according to the purpose for which it is required is the quantity of powder regulated to mix with the aggregates. For building blocks, sills, lintels, and such like forms, from 6 to 10 per cent. of the oxide of magnesium (finely ground) is mixed with properly prepared aggregates, such as marble powder, siliceous sand, or other suitable materials, while for ordinary work, such as walls, 5 per cent. is found sufficient. The above proportioned ingredients are first mixed in a dry state by hand or machine, and then moistened with chloride of magnesium, for which is sometimes substituted bittern water--the refuse of seaside salt-works. When thus moistened, the mortar or concrete is passed through a mixing or pug mill and submitted to a process of trituration. When ejected from the mill the mass should resemble the condition of clay when used by the brickmakers in moulding bricks. The stone paste is then rammed or tamped into the necessary moulds, and the block may soon thereafter be moved. The blocks thus made speedily harden and can be used in...
